Over the past decade, two long-term participatory trials in the Midlands South sugarcane region have provided clear commercial evidence of the value of chemical ripening under real farming conditions. Established in 2014 (variety N41) and 2015 (variety N48), the trials were designed to move beyond theory and demonstrate measurable economic outcomes at field, farm and regional levels.

Each trial field was divided into two sections: an untreated control and a section treated with fluazifop-p-butyl prior to harvest. Crops were harvested on 24-month cycles between April and June, with RV%, cane yield and RV yield assessed after each harvest. Now monitored over ten years, these trials represent one of the longest running on-farm sugarcane quality management studies conducted locally or internationally.

At field level, the results consistently confirmed the physiological trade-off associated with chemical ripening. Treated cane achieved higher RV% but slightly lower tonnage compared to the control. Importantly, this translated into higher overall RV yields, with gains ranging from +0.3 to +3.25 t/ha. Repeated application over successive seasons did not negatively affect ratooning ability, addressing concerns around long-term crop sustainability.

At farm scale, the participatory nature of the work strengthened grower confidence and supported the development of a flexible ripening strategy, adapted annually according to rainfall, crop age and varietal characteristics. This approach enabled the delivery of cane with RV% values between +1.32 and +3.10 percentage points above home mill averages during early-season harvesting.

Regionally, adoption expanded significantly, with the area treated increasing from 648 ha in 2018 to 4,591 ha in 2021. Although uptake declined during 2022–2023 due to carry-over constraints, the trials underscored both the economic potential of chemical ripening and the importance of ongoing knowledge exchange to sustain adoption.
