Remote sensing technology is increasingly being used to help farmers make better, more informed decisions for sustainable farming.

SASRI was recently asked to provide guidance on the satellite crop monitoring services currently available, together with an evaluation of each service. SASRI conducted a review of selected service providers, focusing on those that offer services in South Africa (even if their businesses are based elsewhere). The following services were included in the review:

  • eLEAF (FieldLook)
  • Hydrostat – IrriWatch

eLEAF and Hydrostat – IrriWatch are well known for their expertise in water management. They use satellite-based tools to support irrigation scheduling and to monitor water use. Their services are particularly useful in areas where water is limited.

  • Manna

Manna specialises in irrigation scheduling recommendations, helping farmers apply water more efficiently.

  • Gamaya (CanaSight, AquaView, Canatrace)

Gamaya focuses on precision agriculture using hyperspectral imaging and artificial intelligence (AI). The company aims to help farmers increase yields while improving sustainability.

  • CropWatch Africa

CropWatch monitors crops at both global and regional levels. It provides useful broad insights, although it is generally less detailed at individual field or crop level compared to other commercial platforms.

  • Farmonaut

Farmonaut uses AI and satellite remote sensing to provide affordable, easy-to-use crop monitoring tools. The platform offers practical information on plant health, soil moisture, and variability within fields.

  • Farmdar

Farmdar is a global company that combines satellite data with AI-driven analytics to provide actionable crop monitoring information and advice.
