The September 2021 issue of the Indege is now out!

In this issue, Extension Manager for Small Scale and Land Reform Growers, Thulani Masondo, in conjunction with local Extension Officers, outline the importance of understanding and complying with the Sugar Industry 2023 Seedcane Vision, as well as the importance of effective and efficient farming.

Other articles include the effect of lodged sugarcane on farm returns (by SASRI’s Agricultural Engineer, Peter Tweddle), ways to ensure that planting preparations are done in time (by Nqobile Nxumalo, Agricultural Liaison Officer) and guidance from SASRI’s Agrochemical Scientist, Anushka Gokul on how to control giant Panicum maximum (a taller, thicker and hardier version of the common tufted Ubabe grass).

We also outline a case study on how ripeners can improve RV yields in a small-scale production setting. The importance of the relationship between extension and growers is highlighted, with reference to the changes within the Mpumalanga SASRI extension team.
