Kicking off the new year, the January edition of The Link features Topical Tips, offering guidance on cane quality management this season. We share how crop diversification and inclusion of newer varieties can be a significant factor in increasing a grower’s profits. We also look at the increasing fertiliser prices and the need for strategies that maintain productivity and profits by optimising fertiliser use.

PurEst® is a SASRI mobile application for sugarcane farmers which provides crop ripening recommendations based on Brix readings. Make sure you have the latest version (Version 3.0.2 –March 2022) that has several new features.

SASRI Director, Terry Stanger, explains how the institute responded to the challenges of the past year, and outlines two key areas of SASRI’s programme of work for 2023/24. This edition ends with a summary of recent weather events and a look forward into the likely weather scenario for the first quarter of 2023.
