Much needed research is currently under way on the Yellow Sugarcane Aphid, an elusive pest that has reappeared again this season. Investigations into varietal resistance, the transference of sugarcane mosaic virus by the pest, insecticides, natural predators and the potential of remote sensing with drones to detect YSA are some of the key areas that SASRI scientists are focussing on.
An Information Sheet on YSA has recently been published. This sheet covers a brief description of the biology of the pest, symptoms to assist in identification, potential yield loss associated with the pest and, most importantly, scouting methods and control options. The information sheet is available from the e-Library on our website.
